Five years ago, Dave Whigham could have died.
It seems a bit harsh to just say it like that, but there's no sense sugar-coating it.
He knows it's true. He has lived every day since with no regrets and no opportunities ignored for that very reason.
It was July 2, 2009, and he was pitching for El Paso of the American Association, an independent professional baseball league, when a line drive came straight back at him and hit him in the head above his right ear, shattering his skull. Doctors performed emergency surgery the next morning and operated again weeks later.
